I. Visual Art:

Our visual art curriculum introduces students to the methods of making art, in various mediums, while creating opportunities for students to make meaning out of the work. We see visual art as a vehicle for aesthetic and artistic investigation, a mode for understanding history and culture, a medium for taking risk and experimenting with cause and effect, and a way for students to reflect on their personal and emotional experiences.

Every art project begins with an inspirational piece from history or contemporary practice, then leads to a cultivated and structured classroom discussion- building a students visual literacy and verbal communication- based around inspiring the students to transfer their intellectual and emotional readings of the work to their own practice. Each project or unit is based on a way of making- whether it be collage or bricolage, conceptual performance, Dadaist or surrealist games, sculpture based on found objects, or blind contour portraits- students are exposed to innovation through play and possibilities that helps build their confidence, communication skills, and spatial awareness.

Integrating Movement, Visual Expression, Rhythm and Song in the Classroom:

During these professional development workshops, teachers will be able to identify ways in which more of a student-centered approach can be utilized during Math, Science, History/Social Studies, and Language Arts. We will give teachers the tools they need to facilitate structured creative play within the classroom to allow for students to play a more active role in their academic development.

Teachers will be able to:

1. Describe ways they’ve utilized creative expression to help support a textbook

lesson in small groups. 2. Write poems about concepts they are currently teaching and transfer these poems to a rhythmic beat or melody. 3. Identify and develop ways to instruct children in writing and creating beats and

melodies based on short poems about academic concepts. 4. Identify appropriate timing for incorporating a creative unit. 5.
