Suwon Kim
Suwon Kim (she/her) began playing the violin at the age of 9 in her town of Lexington, Massachusetts. Before her undergraduate years, she won Alternate Prize for the Music Teachers National Association Senior String Competition in 2016 and won State Prize for the same competition in 2018. She received third prize at the American Protégé International Competition in 2017 and was invited to perform in Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Suwon was an avid member of many different ensembles as she was a member of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra from 2017-2019. She has performed in numerous concerts at Symphony Hall as well as tours in Europe and Brazil. She has performed in many youth orchestras at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School as well as the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras since she was 11 years old.
Speaking of ensembles, in the summer of 2016, she attended Boston University Tanglewood Institute. In 2017, she attended Interlochen Arts Camp through scholarship and attended the Aspen Music Festival in the summer of 2019 studying with Alexander Kerr. In 2020, She participated in the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, studying with Pavel Pekarsky. She went to the National Orchestral Institute in Maryland during the summers of 2021 and 2023, studying with Alexander Kerr, Jennifer Ross and Juliana Athayde. During the summer of 2022, she attended the Aspen Music Festival again, studying with Naoko Tanaka.
Suwon received her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Professor Juliana Athayde. She has also completed and received the Artist Leadership Certificate from the program. She is currently in her first year Master’s in Violin Performance at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University studying under Professor Blaire Milton.
Suwon is very eager to teach young kids the violin. She has experience teaching of many ages. She believes that with the right amount of discipline, and interest in music, anyone can play the violin at unrestricted levels.
